Small Batch Traditional Custard

Ingredients

Ingredients (6)
  • 1 cup whole milk (or a mix of milk/cream)
  • 2 large egg yolks
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • Optional: 1 tsp cornstarch

Steps

  1. 1 Whisk yolks, sugar, salt, and cornstarch.
  2. 2 Heat milk in a small saucepan until simmering.
  3. 3 Temper yolks by whisking in half the hot milk, then return all to the pan.
  4. 4 Cook on low, stirring constantly, for 3–5 minutes until it coats a spoon. Stir in vanilla.
